A Life Rooted in Wine
Jonathan Purcell is an Arizona winemaker, vineyard owner, wine educator, and enologist with a passion for the wines and unique growing regions of the American Southwest.
His interest in wine and viticulture began in an unlikely place: Afghanistan. While deployed there during his military service, Jonathan became fascinated by the country's ancient history of grape cultivation. Seeing grapes thrive in an extremely arid environment — and experiencing flavors and varieties unlike those he had encountered in the United States — sparked a lasting interest in how grapevines adapt to desert climates.
That experience ultimately shaped his approach to wine. Rather than viewing Arizona's heat, elevation, dry climate, and rugged terrain simply as challenges, Jonathan became interested in how those conditions can create distinctive wines and give Arizona its own viticultural identity.
His formal wine education began in Seattle at the Northwest Wine Academy, where he studied Wines of the World and expanded his understanding of international wine regions, grape varieties, and wine styles. After moving to Arizona, Jonathan discovered a young and rapidly developing wine industry that felt unusually accessible to a new winemaker. Arizona offered the opportunity not simply to work around an established wine culture, but to become part of one that was still defining itself. He saw a place where an aspiring winemaker could gain hands-on experience, experiment with varieties and techniques, plant vines, and potentially build something of his own. He continued his formal education at Yavapai College's Southwest Wine Center, where he is currently one semester away from completing the program.
Arizona From the Ground Up
Jonathan has also spent a year and a half working with Dragoon Mountain Vineyard, gaining extensive hands-on experience with Arizona viticulture and wine production. His work in the vineyard and around Arizona wine has given him a strong working knowledge of the state's soils, high-desert climate, growing conditions, grape varieties, vineyard practices, and wine culture. This combination of practical vineyard experience and formal wine education has allowed him to understand Arizona wine from the ground up — from establishing and maintaining vines in challenging desert conditions to understanding how those growing conditions ultimately influence the wine in the glass.
Jonathan has worked in and around wine for approximately six years, combining formal education with hands-on winemaking, vineyard development, and experimentation with grape varieties suited to Arizona conditions. His rosé wines have earned two medals, including a 2026 Double Gold for a Refosco Rosé and a Gold for a Cabernet Franc Rosé.
Today, Jonathan is developing his own vineyard in the Willcox AVA of southeastern Arizona, one of the state's most important wine-growing regions. He is currently in the first year of planning, planting, and developing the vineyard, with the goal of producing the first wines made from his own estate-grown fruit in 2028.
As a wine educator and enologist, Jonathan focuses on making wine approachable while telling the larger story behind what is in the glass — from grape variety and vineyard elevation to Arizona's climate, soils, history, and emerging identity as an American wine region. His perspective combines traditional wine education with firsthand experience growing and making wine in one of the most distinctive high-desert wine regions in the United States.
His long-term mission is to help introduce more people to Arizona wine, desert viticulture, and the distinctive wines being produced across the state's high-desert vineyards.
